The glossary to understand and take action

Budget variance

Difference between an actual value and the budgeted value for the same scope and period.

Definition and points to distinguish

The sign must be interpreted according to the indicator: an expense above budget and sales above budget do not have the same effect. The analysis distinguishes, in particular, timing differences, volume variations, price and unforeseen events, and then leads to an action or a revised forecast.

What this changes in practice

A budget variance compares actual results with a forecast prepared for a comparable scope. It may result from volume, prices, timing or a change in assumptions. An unfavourable variance does not automatically indicate poor management, and a favourable variance may conceal a delayed investment. The aim is to explain the cause and then adjust decisions or the forecast.

The practical question

Find out more
